Courses and Offerings in New Hampshire
Because New Hampshire is a fairly small state, it’s not surprising that there are only a few schools offering phlebotomy certification courses. Fortunately, they are all great choices and are, as of this writing, accredited with the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS). Accreditation is important only if you want to become a certified phlebotomist. Certification is not mandatory in the state of New Hampshire, but it is still recommended, as employers look favorably upon certified candidates. You may also be able to start at a higher salary if you are certified.
Course work will include science and technology courses, such as physiology, anatomy, and medical technology. You will learn how to conduct lab tests on blood samples and you will learn how to maintain the integrity of each sample by labeling and transporting them properly. You will also be taught the proper technique for locating the right veins for venipuncture. For some patients you will need to know that a skin puncture is the proper technique, and you will learn what questions you need to ask of any patients before performing the procedure.
Phlebotomy certification in New Hampshire also requires that you spend at least 120 hours doing hands-on training, usual in a clinic or hospital. This will expose you to the real life work environment of phlebotomists. You will also see that working with patients in this way requires great inter-personal skills and the ability to care for your patients when they are nervous or afraid. Having your blood taken is not a very fun experience, so phlebotomists often work to make it as comfortable as possible.
Job Opportunities
The good news is that there are many jobs for phlebotomists in New Hampshire, as well as around the country. The demand for medical services, especially testing and screening procedures, is growing thanks to the aging baby boomer generation. There are more elderly people in the country now than ever before and that population is only going to grow as the baby boomers age. Jobs in medicine are plentiful, especially in fields like phlebotomy.
